Furness Waste Consortium

Annual Statement

Chair Person’s report 2010

We completed a review of the Constitution, Mission Statement, Position Statement and developed new objectives.

Web design has been a regular feature of our meetings this year and has now become a regular agenda item. We are improving getting information onto the website but this is still a slow process for us.

A new membership pack is under development and now just requires the agreement of the members. We have also increased our activity in recruitment and have been able to welcome the companies listed below to the Consortium:South lakes Wild Animal ParkWax LyricalFurness TrainingUlverston Scrap Store

This year we have been able to comment on the Cumbria Waste Mineral Plan through individual member companies. P&W Confidential Shredding Services in Barrow and Solvent Resource Management at Knottingley both received Duty of Care Audits by Glaxo.

As part of our external communications we collected bandages and spectacles in support of SLWAP Wildlife Trust Conservation Group. There was publicity in the local press and in individual organisations newsletter, SLDC website and newsletter. We collected approximately 1000 pairs of spectacles and 20 large boxes of bandages which were sent to Niger Conservation Charity.

We have had a number of guest speakers:-March – Susannah Bleakley (Morecambe Bay Partnership)May – Oriol Segarra (Tradebe)July - Ewan Scott ( Furness College) and Karen Brewer (SLWAP)September – Steve Buss and Lindsay Killick (Real Aid), Jeff Crosthwaite (HRL) and Corrin Hanlin (Ulverston Scrap Store)

In 2010 we had 12 Schools participate in World Environment Day - One Species, One Planet, One Future. Prizes were kindly donated by South Lakes Wild Animal Park, Beatrix Potter Attraction, Lakes Aquarium, Lakeland Oasis and FWC. The prize giving event was at the South Lakes Wild Animal Park in July and was reported in the local press.

A drama based training event with a company called JUICE was organised to be delivered to local safety officers as an example of Good Practice - this training is currently used by Centrica. It was scheduled for December but was rescheduled for January and feedback from delegates was that they found it enjoyable and informative.

SLWAP kindly opened their doors free of charge to the employees of the Consortium for a family day out Members of the consortium attended an evening event at SLWAP which was a fundraiser for the critically endangered Cotton Top Tamarin.

Members of the consortium have been meeting regularly and taking part in the weekly Pub Quiz at The Bay Horse in Barrow - with varying degrees of success.
